Student Information In addition to the classroom presentations, the Butler SWCD also offers other programs for students. A complete list of all rules and guidelines for the following programs are available upon request. WaterFest- Fourth - sixth grade students are invited to participate in classroom sessions to discuss and study aspects of water and water issues. It is an all-day program held at Miami University, in Hamilton in October, 2006. Representatives from various local and state organizations will conduct these 30 minute sessions. Poster Contest- The poster contest has been reorganized to coincide with the Ohio Federation of Soil and Water Conservation Districts Auxiliary contest. It is open to students in the following grade brackets: K-1, 2-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12. For 2005, students interpret the provided theme, announced later, and use any flat medium to portray their own thoughts onto a posterboard, sized between 8.5" x 11" to 22" x 28". First and second place prizes are awarded for each Division and will move through to the next level of contest; Area, State or National. Entries must be received before 4:00 P.M., on April 29, each year. Contact this office for complete guidelines, including those regarding digital art, and registration information. Envirothon- This
national, academic contest is open to students in grades 9-12, who are
interested in being tested in the areas of soils, aquatics, wildlife,
forestry, and current environmental issues. A local Practice Envirothon
may be organized to prepare students for the Area 4 Envirothon. The
top overall scoring teams proceed to the State, and then onto the Nationals.
Study materials are made available online in March, which allows
teams to download items at their convenience. Forestry Camp- Two scholarships are allotted for any student who is 15 years old and has completed the eighth grade. This is a week-long academic summer camp held at Camp Muskingum. Applications are available in early spring. Organized by the Ohio Forestry Association, Inc. College Scholarship- The Gerald A. Morris College Scholarship is a non-renewable $500 grant available for Ohio college students, who originally lived in Butler County. These students must be enrolled in a course of study which focuses on conservation or natural resources. Applications are available upon request, and must be received in the Butler SWCD office or postmarked by May 30, each year.
